The bench earlier heard Inspector General (IG) Prisons, Sindh, who informed the bench about progress regarding action against prison officials who violated prison rules. The bench was informed that as per report of the inquiry made by the District and Sessions judge, Malir, and recommendations there in, several officials, including Deputy Superintendent, Assistant Jailor and others were penalised. Some of them were penalised with minor and some with major penalties.
The bench directed the IG Prisons and Special Home Secretary who were present before the bench to submit a detailed report by March 1 regarding action taken with names and details of the delinquent officials. The IG Prisons at the fag end of the proceedings stated that the said officials were under suspension since long but they were drawing salary for no work. He said that in view of shortage of staff they might be allowed to work.
The bench allowed the request and said that they could be posted elsewhere and made to work but not in Malir prison. The petitioner who remained in the Malir Prison as an Under Trial Prisoner (UTP) in a number of cases and was well aware of the situation inside the Malir prison filed the petition. While the said petition was pending, DJ Malir as per policy conducted a surprise raid and made a detailed report which confirmed the allegation levelled by the petitioner regarding maltreatment of inmates, corruption, etc.
